Valentine Shmalentine (so much for conviction) (2/13/15)

Faith’s thoughts on Valentine’s Day BEFORE stopping at CVS this morning:

Valentine’s Day is a horrible holiday – a horrible, horrible, horrible, without question horrible, holiday.

Why? Why, specifically, is it a horrible holiday?

Where to start...

Reason #1:
It’s a corporate, for-profit, holiday, created strictly* to convince us to spend money on weird chocolate that we wouldn’t want any other time of the year, flowers that will die, and stuffed bears holding pink hearts.
Creating incredibly high expectations and undue stress to relationships, it puts a price on love:
the more a person spends=the more a person cares,
which is not realistic and completely unfair.
(*Ok, ok, per Wikipedia, it actually started out as a liturgical celebration…
but I think we can agree that it eventually turned into a corporate, for-profit…blah, blah, blah)

Reason #2:
We should tell our loved ones how much we care 365 days a year and not just on one, designated day.
I think it’s lovely for people to express their love for each other. Who would say that’s a bad thing? Love and appreciation is great! I just think that designating a specific day as THE DAY TO SAY IT sort of implies that we don’t necessarily have to say it the rest of the year, and we should.

Reason #3 (the absolutely most important reason):
It can be incredibly exclusive and can be an extremely lonely day for some people.
While I am in a relationship now, I have still been single for more Valentine’s Days than not…and it stinks. Granted, I’m not the most optimistic of people. There are a gazillion examples of singles who are stronger, and more capable of seeing beyond themselves, than I. I’ve seen people transform the day into less of a pity party and into something more meaningful – a day to love others and not just a day to be loved by one other person.
That’s awesome.
But, if there is even one person who is impacted negatively by the day or made to feel less-than, that’s absolutely not ok. It’s just not.

Faith’s thoughts on Valentine’s Day AFTER stopping at CVS this morning (where she was reminded that Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Hearts are produced for Valentine’s Day...and for Valentine's Day ONLY:

Valentine’s Day is a (mostly, but not totally) horrible holiday.

Everyone talks about the danger of processed foods to our physical health….for me, it seems to be more of a danger to my personal beliefs and convictions (regarding holidays, at least).
